PEDRAP
Pediatric Emphasis Diagnostic Radiology Alternative Pathway
The ABR initially implemented the PEDRAP (Pediatric Emphasis Diagnostic Radiology Alternative Pathway) program in 2005 in response to a nationwide shortage of pediatric radiologists, primarily to provide those who had subspecialty training in pediatrics with an opportunity to enter radiology training designed with a focused experience in pediatric radiology.
The ABR has devoted a great deal of time discussing the merits and costs of continuing this alternative pathway within individual institutions. As a result of these discussions, the ABR has decided to discontinue the program. This is based on many factors, especially the low number of individuals participating, the difficulty and expense of tracking individuals in the program, and the anticipated changes in residency curricula effective July 1, 2010, that potentially provide opportunities for focused pediatric radiology training within the four-year curriculum.
The ABR intends to honor and support all residents who are currently participating in the PEDRAP program, and those who are starting in 2010 or 2011.
- Residents entering the pathway will need one year of clinical training prior to beginning the core diagnostic radiology program.
- The core diagnostic imaging training will include:
a. Adult-oriented radiology training - two years
b. Pediatric-oriented radiology training - two years
c. Total training (including clinical year) - five years

- This pathway will lead to ABR certification in diagnostic radiology, but will not meet the qualification requirements to take the subspecialty (CAQ) examination in pediatric radiology. An additional year of training in an ACGME-accredited fellowship program will be required for the candidate to be eligible for the subspecialty exam.
- This plan maintains the general scheme by which the Holman Pathway is administered, with a similar number of months in the adult radiology training core. The major change is the emphasis on the pediatric radiology training core.
- The ultimate plan may be instituted in parent programs or in institutions that have integrated or affiliate relationships with children's hospitals.
