Matching into my top-choice radiology program last week was an unforgettable experience, one that was filled with immense excitement and overwhelming relief. Leading up to Match Day, I felt incredibly nervous. Despite working tirelessly throughout medical school, investing countless hours in studying, rotations, and research, there was still that lingering uncertainty. However, what kept me grounded was the belief that I had truly given it my all.

During my rotations and interviews, I felt a strong connection with those I now consider “my people” – residents, attendings, and faculty who made me feel at home. These were individuals who not only inspired me but also created an environment where I knew I could thrive. I found a field I love, one I genuinely believe I can excel in, and I was fortunate to show that passion and dedication during my interviews and rotations. Knowing that I had been true to myself and demonstrated my best kept me holding on to hope.

When I opened my Match envelope and saw my dream residency program, I was overcome with emotion. Years of hard work, late nights, and unwavering determination had culminated in this incredible moment. My family, my husband, and all my loved ones could finally take a breath alongside me. Not only did this match validate my efforts, but it also brought the exciting reality that my husband and I can now take the next step – finding our first home together. This match wasn’t just a career milestone; it was the start of a new chapter in our lives, and I couldn’t be more grateful.

Athena matched into the Hartford Hospital Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program. She will start an internship year at the University of Connecticut Internal Medicine Program this summer. She holds an MS from and is completing a DO at Touro University College of Medicine in Middletown, New York.
