Changes to Medical Physics Structured Mentorship

On July 15, 2026, the ABR announced its decision to reduce the length of the medical physics structured mentorship. The structured mentorship is a component of the Alternate Pathway that may be used by international medical physics graduates. The former requirement was the full-time equivalent of 36 months of training; the announcement reduces the length to 24 months to be consistent with medical physics residency programs. This new requirement will become effective November 1, 2026.

Advance notice is provided to allow supervisors of trainees in the MP alternate pathway the option to restructure their structured mentorship. If a change is made, a revised training plan should be submitted to the ABR before November 1, 2026.

Regardless of any change in the length of the structured mentorship, supervisors will continue to be required to attest to the completion of all elements of the training plan before a trainee will be considered board eligible.
