Alternate Pathway to Subspecialty Certification
Last verified on May 1, 2019
A diplomate of the ABR may attain subspecialty certification in neuroradiology, nuclear radiology, and/or pediatric radiology without taking an accredited fellowship if he or she is on the subspecialty faculty at an institution with an ACGME-accredited fellowship in that discipline. Serving on the subspecialty faculty at a single institution for two consecutive years at 1.0 FTE with at least 75 percent clinical responsibility in that discipline, or for three consecutive years at 1.0 FTE with at least a 50 percent clinical responsibility in that discipline, qualifies the faculty member to take the initial subspecialty exam.
The application window for this pathway is February 1 through April 30. Please check back here on February 1, 2020, for the 2020 exam application.
It must be submitted to the ABR before a decision is made on candidate qualifications. Please note that an application for attaining subspecialty certification by the alternate pathway will expire in 10 years if certification is not achieved by that time.
