Subspecialties for Diagnostic Radiology

Alternate Pathway to Subspecialty Certification

Last verified on January 7, 2019

A diplomate of the ABR may attain subspecialty certification in vascular and interventional radiology (now IR/DR) without taking an accredited fellowship if he or she is on the subspecialty faculty at an institution with an ACGME-accredited fellowship in that discipline. Serving on the subspecialty faculty at a single institution for two consecutive years at 1.0 FTE with at least 75 percent clinical responsibility in that discipline, or for three consecutive years at 1.0 FTE with at least a 50 percent clinical responsibility in that discipline, qualifies the faculty member to take the initial subspecialty exam.

The application window for this pathway is November 1 through February 28. To register for the next exam, please contact information@theabr.org or call (520) 790-2900.

Applications must be submitted to the ABR before a decision is made on candidate qualifications. Those applications will be accepted until February 28, 2020.

Diplomates who submit an application via the Alternate Pathway must pass the IR/DR Oral exam by the 2020 administration. Those who do not fully pass the exam by 2020 would need to pursue another available IR/DR certification pathway. Please see the IR/DR initial certification information on our website.
