Advisory Committees
Learn how ABR volunteer advisory committees support certification improvements. Find details about committee roles, travel policies, and more.
-
Volunteers are at the heart of what we do. The ABR’s advisory committees are vital to keeping our work relevant, responsive, and focused on the future.
There are two advisory committees (Initial Certification and Continuing Certification) for each discipline, made up of non-board member volunteers who are directly impacted by their relevant discipline’s processes.
These committees meet regularly to share feedback on issues related to their specific discipline. Their insights help us improve communication, streamline certification, and ensure we’re meeting the real-world needs of our diplomates and candidates.

Initial Certification Medical Physics Advisory Committee Initial Certification Advisory Committees
The Initial Certification Advisory Committees (ICACs) focus on supporting candidates preparing for their initial board exams. The ABR provides ICACs with a detailed look at how exams are developed and scored, and how our work supports the certification process. This gives ICAC volunteers valuable insights they can bring back to their training programs.
In many ways, ICAC members become ambassadors for the ABR — helping to dispel myths, answer questions, and make the process more transparent and supportive for candidates.
ICAC volunteers also help us:
- Improve how we communicate with trainees.
- Raise concerns and explore solutions around exam content or format changes.
- Evaluate and suggest better ways to reach residents and fellows.
- Track the success of these improvements over time.
The feedback and ideas from ICAC members help make the certification process smoother, more accessible, and more supportive for candidates.

Continuing Certification Advisory Committees
The Continuing Certification Advisory Committees (CCACs) provide valuable feedback from the perspective of a diplomate. Members actively participate in Continuing Certification.
Their mission is to make the program more intuitive and integrated into everyday practice.
These volunteers help identify pain points, suggest improvements, and offer real-world perspectives to help ensure that the Continuing Certification program is meaningful, manageable, and clearly aligned with clinical practice.
