One ABR medical physics volunteer partially owes his career path to balloon animals. As an undergraduate majoring in physics in his native Australia, Leith Rankine, PhD, and others from his university volunteered to visit Perth Children’s Hospital, where they handed out balloons they had twisted to appreciative kids. It was there that Dr. Rankine made…
Representatives from all four disciplines certified by the ABR are part of the new class of American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Scholars: Warren Campbell IV, MD, PhD (diagnostic radiology); Kofi Deh, PhD (medical physics); Mary Mahoney, MD (radiation oncology); and Daniel Veyg, DO (interventional radiology). Dr. Campbell is a resident at the University of Virginia Medical Center. His research project is titled: “Quantifying Diagnostic Excellence: Utilizing…
When he arrived in Pittsburgh last September for the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) Conference, Abdullah Alshreef, PhD, was just becoming familiar with the importance of board certification. Dr. Alshreef had recently been selected as an ABMS Scholar, one of three funded last year by the ABR. They each received $15,000 grants to be part of the year-long, part-time program that supports early career physicians,…
Artificial intelligence (AI) is advancing at a pace that is prompting reflection across the medical community, including within organizations responsible for certification and establishing lifelong professional standards. For the American Board of Radiology (ABR), this moment presents an opportunity to consider how emerging technologies may intersect with our mission — not only in terms of potential innovation, but also…
What goes into creating an appropriate question for an ABR computer-based exam? More than you might think. In this video, current and former volunteers who have worked on content explain the exacting process that ensures rigor and fairness on Initial Certification exams.
After the Titanic sank in 1912, it took 73 years for the wreckage to be found. What was considered cutting-edge sonar technology in 1985 was key to finding the ship at the bottom of the vast Atlantic Ocean. That search and the methods used inspired ABR volunteer Jaydev Dave, PhD, to pursue a career in medical physics (MP). The science of sound was music…
In his former career, medical physicist and ABR volunteer Matt Vanderhoek, PhD, taught high-school physics in Brooklyn. Getting students interested in the subject took effort. To overcome the challenge, Dr. Vanderhoek would spend the opening day of class doing demonstrations that captured his pupils’ attention. Knowing they were going through a boring day of reviewing…
The ABR will welcome three new Trustees at the conclusion of its fall Board meeting. Phuong-Anh T. Duong, MD (diagnostic radiology quality and safety), AJ Gunn, MD (interventional radiology), and Katja Langen, PhD (therapeutic medical physics), will join the Board of Trustees (BOT) in October. Dr. Duong is an associate professor in the department of…
ABR Trustee Jennifer Stickel, PhD, is vice president of diagnostic/nuclear medicine physics at Colorado Associates in Medical Physics in Colorado Springs. In this video, she offers step-by-step guidance for medical physics trainees.
One of the ways that medical physicist Justin Zenn relaxes away from work is mixing it up in a local hockey league a couple of times a week in Fishers, Indiana, near Indianapolis. Every January, he takes it to the extreme and participates in the U.S. Pond Hockey Championships, an outdoor event. This year’s tournament…
The start of a new year is a good point to reflect on the recent past and look to the future. ABR Executive Director Brent Wagner, MD, MBA, recently took time to address questions about a few of the organization’s accomplishments and opportunities. The new Diagnostic Oral Certifying Exam is coming in a couple of…
As most medical physicists are aware, in 2002, the ABR announced its decision to require candidates for certification to have completed a CAMPEP-accredited graduate program. The date of implementation was set for 2012 to allow programs and candidates plenty of time to prepare for this change. Shortly afterward, the AAPM recommended that the ABR also…
