American Board of Radiology Appoints New Trustee for Interventional Radiology

The American Board of Radiology (ABR) has appointed Anne M. Covey, MD, FSIR, to its Board of Trustees, effective October 23, 2017. Dr. Covey will replace Jeanne M. LaBerge, MD, as one of the ABR’s three trustees for interventional radiology.
Dr. Covey is currently an interventional radiologist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and professor of radiology for Weill Cornell Medical College, both in New York City. For the past six years, she has been named a Top Doctor in the New York metro area by Castle Connolly. She volunteers for the ABR as an examiner and serves as an assistant editor of the American Journal of Roentgenology.
ABR-certified in both diagnostic and vascular and interventional radiology, Dr. Covey is a graduate of New York’s Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. She completed her internship, residency and fellowship at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut.
Dr. Covey has clinical expertise in minimally-invasive procedures and is known locally and nationally for her research into diseases of the liver. Her clinical and research interests include arterially directed therapies and ablation to treat liver tumors and biliary interventions. Palliation of symptoms related to cancer is also an important part of her practice. She has worked closely with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network to develop consensus guidelines for imaging and locoregional treatment of liver tumors.
Dr. Covey is a fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) and the author of numerous publications and presentations.

The American Board of Radiology (ABR) has appointed Matthew B. Podgorsak, PhD, FAAPM, to its Board of Trustees, effective February 1, 2017. He fills the position previously held by Michael G. Herman, PhD, FAAPM.Dr. Podgorsak has a 13-year history of volunteer service to the ABR and previously received a Volunteer Service Award. He has served on question-writing committees and also as an oral examiner.
A specialist in therapeutic medical physics, Dr. Podgorsak is currently chief physicist of Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s Department of Radiation Medicine in Buffalo, New York. He is also associate professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biophysics at the Roswell Park Graduate Division, University at Buffalo, SUNY.
Dr. Podgorsak received his undergraduate degrees at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and his PhD in the Department of Medical Physics at the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
From December 1993 through August 1998, Dr. Podgorsak served as staff physicist in the Department of Radiation Medicine at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, becoming its chief physicist in September 1998. In 2008, he was appointed associate professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at the University at Buffalo, SUNY, where he continues to mentor students enrolled in the Department’s graduate medical physics program.
Dr. Podgorsak is a Fellow of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, and he holds associate memberships in the American Society for Radiation Oncology and the American College of Radiation Oncology. His research interests include stereotactic radiosurgery and the principles and practices of volumetric modulated arc therapy, and he is the author and co-author of numerous publications.

The American Board of Radiology (ABR) has named Brent J. Wagner, MD, as president-elect. He succeeds former ABR President-Elect Lisa A. Kachnic, MD, who became ABR president effective October 28, 2016.
Dr. Wagner, a diagnostic radiologist with a subspecialty in body imaging, has been a member of West Reading Radiology Associates, a private practice in West Reading, Pennsylvania, since 1998 and is currently its president. He is a former medical staff president of the Reading Health System. He received his undergraduate education at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, and attended Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. He served his internship at Roanoke Memorial Hospital and his residency at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center at Lackland AFB, Texas. Dr. Wagner has served on the ABR Board since 2011 and is currently a member of the ABR’s Board of Governors. He is a former staff member of the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) and current visiting lecturer for the American College of Radiology’s (ACR’s) American Institute for Radiologic Pathology (AIRP). He is on the editorial board of RadioGraphics, offering his expertise in genitourinary imaging.
Dr. Wagner also serves on the Professionalism Committee for the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and is a member of the Commission on Leadership and Practice Development for the ACR. A member of the Reading Health System Board of Directors since 2010, he currently serves as board chairman. He is also a member of the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Pennsylvania Radiological Society, and the Berks County Medical Society. He is a senior member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine and a fellow of the Society of Abdominal Radiology. Dr. Wagner’s honors and awards include Phi Beta Kappa (Lafayette College); chief resident (October 1990 to March 1991); Residency Teacher of the Year (1992-1993 and 1998-1999); First Place Award, Society of Uroradiology/European Society of Uroradiology Film Interpretation competition (June 1996, Zurich, Switzerland), Air Force Commendation Medal (1988), and Air Force Commendation Medal, First Oak Leaf Cluster (1994). Author or co-author of nearly 50 publications, he lectures regularly on many genitourinary and radiology leadership topics. He counts computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound as his areas of special interest and expertise.
