Call for Stakeholder Comments Regarding Diagnostic Radiology Initial Certification

Call for Stakeholder Comments Regarding Diagnostic Radiology Initial Certification

Background & Goals

As we near a decade since making major modifications to the American Board of Radiology (ABR) Diagnostic Radiology (DR) Initial Certification (IC) process, we are seeking stakeholder input and insights into the process, with the goal of continuous improvement. This review includes both the Qualifying (Core) and Certifying exams.

At this point in the process, we are focused on gathering feedback and perspectives before considering possible modifications. If the ABR elects to make substantial changes, we are committed to providing at least five years’ notice before those changes would be implemented to ensure that residents already in training are not impacted, which is consistent with the approach taken by the board previously.

Feedback Timing & Process

Stakeholder input begins in early May 2022 and should be completed by early September 2022. We’ve partnered with Jennings Healthcare Marketing to help us conduct the comprehensive process of seeking stakeholder feedback and insight through multiple channels.

Targeted Stakeholder Organization Input. Given the large number of affiliated organizations in radiology, we are focusing on several key groups representing residents, program directors, department chairs, private practice and community radiology perspectives. In the coming months, Jennings will help facilitate multiple structured feedback sessions with these organizations’ executive leadership. In addition, the targeted organizations are encouraged to seek input from their constituency. Recommended discussion points will be available for interested organizations on the ABR website by May 25. After data collection, the ABR will schedule a follow-up with these key groups for further discussion. Organizations are encouraged to submit a written synopsis of their feedback to the ABR no later than September 1, 2022.

Other Stakeholder Organization Input. We value input from as many perspectives as possible and we invite any interested organization to submit a written synopsis of their feedback to the ABR no later than September 1, 2022. Submissions can be made to communications@theabr.org. We encourage these organizations to seek input from their constituency.

Individual Stakeholder Input. Any individual interested in providing feedback is invited to complete the Diagnostic Radiology Initial Certification Feedback Survey. The survey will close August 31, 2022.

Anticipated Output

Based on the stakeholder input gathered, Jennings Healthcare Marketing will compile a final feedback report, which we anticipate will be available to share publicly in early November 2022.
