Subspecialties for Interventional Radiology/Diagnostic Radiology

Pain Medicine

Last verified on June 19, 2017

Only candidates who are certified in general radiology, diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology, or interventional/diagnostic radiology are eligible to be certified in pain medicine.

The Certificate

In 2015, the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) approved the ABR as a co-sponsor of subspecialty certification in pain medicine. The official ABMS subspecialty certification in pain medicine is administered through the American Board of Anesthesiology. Recognizing that a wide range of specialists are involved in this discipline, several other member boards of the ABMS, including the American Board of Radiology, are co-sponsors of this ABMS-recognized discipline.

Although the program is primarily administered through the American Board of Anesthesiology, diplomates of any of co-sponsoring boards are eligible to obtain certification if they meet essential eligibility requirements and pass a certifying exam. To be eligible for the exam, candidates are required to satisfactorily complete a full one-year ACGME-accredited Pain Medicine Fellowship Program. In addition, they must hold certification in their primary specialty (for ABR diplomates, initial certification in diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology, or interventional/diagnostic radiology).

For those interested in this certification, registration and application are available through the ABR. Please see the Requirements page and  Dates, Locations, and Fees for additional information and registration details.
